I’ve got some tips to manage your review of the issues and avoid being overwhelmed. If your GEDCOM file is like mine, then you’ll be wincing at your first look at a lengthy list of errors and warnings. Tips For Getting Started With the Chronoplex Gedcom Validator This may be a hindrance depending on your circumstances. Unfortunately, the help files are on the Chronoplex website so you need an internet connection to access this feature. A simple right-click on an issue opens the help file. This means that if you’re new to validating GEDCOMs, then you’re going to want to read the more extensive help document for each error code. However, the application shows you some fairly minimal information about the issue – enough to fit in a single line. You don’t need an internet connection to review the list of errors and warnings. I was happy to test it on a GEDCOM of my largest tree, which has entries for living people.
The application opens GEDCOM files on your local machine, and there is no need to upload files to a remote site. This tool has one job to do and doesn’t overcomplicate things. The application has a simple one-screen interface. There isn’t a Mac version, so you’d need an emulator to run it on a Mac OS.

I downloaded the software from the Chronoplex Software website, but you can also get it in the Microsoft store. The Chronoplex GEDCOM Validator is a Windows desktop application. The installation files may still be available, but I didn’t check them out. Two other tools on the page are no longer being maintained by their developers: VGedX and GedChk.

The real key to its success however lies in the contribution and support from people. Back in 1999, who would have thought that Ages! would become a such a widely used application amongst genealogists? A few decisions probably helped, first and foremost the decision to use GEDCOM as sole database format. At the same time, were working on the next major update, which will include a few surprises.

This update will most probably be made available in 2009. Right now there are two "forks" that we're working on - one will be another minor update to the 1.5 series with more bug fixes and a few new functions. As in the past, we're constantly working on futher improvements and updates to Ages!. Funnily enough, even the oldest version of Ages! still runs on Windows 7.

One of our test systems runs Windows 7 RC, and Ages! works flawlessly.

Very few other products in the market were able to cope with technological developments as well as Ages! did: PDF creation without a pseudo-printer, export to JPEG, create CDs and mobile use on USB sticks, hassle free installation on XP and Vista.

After five free major updates and a number of minor ones, Ages! has grown to a full featured system. The Exe-File had less than a megabyte, and had the most basic functions to manage genealogical data.
